Indian cricket captain, Virat Kohli becomes the sole Indian sportsperson to feature in the list of world’s 100 highest paid athletes, which is topped by Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Kohli ranked on 89th spot of 2017 Forbes list of ‘The World’s highest paid athletes’ with a total pay of $22 million (more than Rs 141 crores) in a year; $3 million(Rs 19.27 crores) through salary and $19 (Rs 122.08 crores )million from brand endorsements.
It noted that last year, Kohli made nearly $1 million (around Rs 6.42 crores) in salary and match fees from his national team play, and he’s also among the Indian Premier League’s highest-paid players thanks to a $2.3 million (around Rs 14.77 crores) Salary from Royal Challengers Bangalore.
A significant part of his earnings are from sponsorships. He recently signed an eight-year contract with Puma for $16.5 million (above Rs 106 crores). Along with this, Kohli also has brands like Pepsi, Herbalife, Tissot and Audi with him.
Forbes earnings figures include all salaries and bonuses earned between June 1, 2016 and June 1, 2017. Endorsement incomes are an estimate of sponsorship deals, appearance fees and licensing income for the 12 months through June 1 based on conversations with dozens of industry insiders.
However, the earnings do not deduct for taxes or agents’ fees, nor include investment income. The list includes only athletes active in the last 12 months.
Athletes from 21 countries are represented among the top 100, but Americans dominate the list with 63 entries thanks to soaring salaries in the professional Americans leagues like the National Basketball Association, National Football League and Major League Baseball.
